A transfer plan for different generations of recordings
The video transfer page names VHS, VHS-C, MiniDV, Hi8 and MiniDVD among the media Tommy Productions transfers and repairs. If your recordings span different cameras, that range gives you a concrete list to compare with the labels on your collection. MiniDVD is a disc format, so keep those discs separate from the cassettes when making your inventory.
There is also a separate film and audio service covering 8mm, Super 8 and 16mm film, cassette tapes and reel-to-reel recordings. A family project could therefore involve several kinds of originals, but ask for a quote that identifies each type separately. The amount of film, the number of audio recordings and the number of video tapes are different measures; one should not stand in for another.
Let the condition of the tape guide the first conversation
Tommy Productions describes cleaning, repair and transfer work for damaged or moldy tapes. Its published recovery information says evaluations are free and that customers pay only for successful repairs and transfers completed. That is a useful basis for a discussion, but an assessment of your particular recording still matters. Ask how the business defines a successful recovery if only part of a tape can be saved.
Before handling a visibly damaged cassette, photograph its label and note what you can see without opening it. Explain any known water exposure, broken casing or previous playback trouble. Avoid trying a questionable tape repeatedly in a home player. Ask the provider what to do with moldy media before packing it with the rest of your collection, and do not assume every recording can be restored.
Arrange the handover and a realistic completion date
The website offers drop-off or mail service and tells customers to call for an appointment at the Franklinville studio. Prepare a numbered inventory before that conversation, with the format, label wording and known condition of each item. A photograph of the whole group can help you reconcile the returned originals with your list. For a mailed order, confirm packing instructions and the return arrangements before sending anything.
The repair page says most repairs take 8-10 business days, while severely damaged collections requiring extensive work may need 2-3 weeks. It also says rush service is available to discuss. Those are repair estimates, not a blanket completion promise for every transfer order. If the videos are needed for a birthday gathering, agree on the relevant deadline and ask whether the size and condition of your collection affect it.
Choose files you can use, then check what comes back
Tommy Productions specifies standard MP4 files for video transfers. Its repair service also lists USB, DVD or a cloud link as delivery options. Ask how your selected delivery method provides access to the MP4 files, especially if you intend to upload them to a family archive. A disc for watching and a file for storing are different practical needs. Confirm the total quote, any delivery charges and file naming before work begins.
On receipt, match each file to your inventory and check the beginning, middle and end, including sound. Keep the supplied files intact while making separate copies for edits or shorter highlights. Tommy Productions says original tapes are returned with digital files, and its repair information says originals are returned even when repair is unsuccessful. Keep those originals, plus a second digital backup in a separate place.
Turn a finished transfer into a family conversation
Once you have the digital videos, Memrial is a separate private family archive for organizing and sharing them. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Tommy Productions. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes when deciding what to upload first, then invite relatives to help identify people, places and occasions.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates so you can find memories by year, even when a tape label only suggests a period. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video using host play, pause and seek controls, with voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. A reunion recording becomes easier to discuss when everyone can pause at the same moment.
For a future reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed. That lets newly recorded moments sit alongside older transfers, with relatives adding the stories that a filename cannot explain.
