A pickup service, with no storefront visit
Tree Memories Digital describes itself as Houston-based and says it collects photos and videos from your home, returning them after digitization. Pickup and delivery carry no extra cost within the Houston area. That wording does not define every eligible neighborhood, so confirm your address when booking rather than treating the listed area as a precise coverage boundary.
You can coordinate a pickup by phone, text message, email or the website contact form. Before the handover, make a simple inventory with a number for each tape and a photograph of its label. Keep that copy yourself. It gives you something concrete to compare with the returned collection, particularly when several relatives have contributed recordings.
Start with a few tapes or combine several formats
The published supported formats include VHS, VHS-C, Video8, Hi8, Digital8 and MiniDV, as well as film reels. The company also explicitly says there is no minimum order. You can therefore discuss a small first batch without having to assemble the entire family collection at once.
A useful first batch might contain recordings you recognize and want to share soon. Group the formats separately and write down anything you know about their contents. If a cassette has a cracked case, visible mold or loose tape, describe the problem before pickup and ask whether it can be handled. Do not open it or try repeated playback to diagnose it. Film reels belong in a separate conversation about the particular film format and transfer requirements.
Agree on delivery and the complete quote
Tree Memories Digital says videos are delivered as MP4 files and photos as JPG files. You can receive them on a USB drive, through a downloadable link or both. Choose the method around the way you will actually use the recordings: a download can be convenient for a computer, while a USB copy may suit someone who wants a physical handover.
Ask how recordings will be named and separated, and whether the files will play on the devices your family uses. Confirm the complete conversion quote, any USB-related cost and applicable taxes before agreeing to the job. The published details here establish the delivery choices but do not establish a per-tape price. If a relative expects a particular output, include that requirement in the first discussion.
Use the delivery window to check and back up
The website says smaller projects are typically ready in 3 to 5 business days, while larger collections may take up to two weeks. These are project-dependent estimates, so get a timing estimate for your own collection, especially if you hope to show a recording at a reunion or birthday.
After delivery, the company keeps a project backup for 30 days and says it will resend misplaced files during that period at no extra charge. Use that window actively. Open every file, check the beginning, middle and end, listen to the sound, and compare the files with your inventory. Make a second copy on a separate device. Keep your original tapes labeled and stored safely; a temporary provider backup should not become your long-term preservation plan.
Let relatives add the dates and stories
Once conversion is complete, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Tree Memories Digital. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check how much space your videos require before deciding which recordings to upload first.
Invite relatives to help identify people, places and occasions. Memrial Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording known only as a summer in the 1990s can still become easier to find by year. Albums, comments and stories let the family add context without needing to know every detail before the first upload.
For a reunion recording, a Live Watch Party synchronizes the uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek and relatives joining through voice or text chat from nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. Event Memories can gather new reunion photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; uploads go into the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
