Separate silent reels from film with sound
Triangle Memory Box's film pricing separates standard eight-millimeter and Super eight reels without sound from Super eight reels with sound. For silent film, a single 3-inch reel is $20; two or more 3-inch reels are $12 per reel. The listed prices for larger silent reels are $20 for a 4-inch reel, $30 for a 5-inch reel, $40 for a 6-inch reel and $50 for a 7-inch reel.
For Super eight film with sound, a single 3-inch reel is $25, or $17 per reel for two or more 3-inch reels. The corresponding 4-, 5-, 6- and 7-inch reel prices are $25, $35, $45 and $55 per reel. These are film prices, so they cannot be used to estimate a box of videotapes. Tax treatment and any additional charges should be confirmed when requesting your total.
Make a simple inventory with each reel's diameter and label text. Keep uncertain items in their own group and ask the business to identify them. A handwritten date may describe the occasion rather than when the film was developed, so preserve the wording instead of silently correcting it.
Recorded voices belong in the inventory too
The audio service names albums, 45s, CDs, cassettes, microcassettes and reel-to-reel tapes. Triangle Memory Box offers digital audio such as MP3 or WAV, or delivery on a CD. Its audio pricing lists a single tape, album or CD at $20 and two or more at $12 per media. Check how the business counts mixed items before treating that as your final quote.
A recording of someone explaining a family photograph can be as useful as the photograph itself. Note recognizable speakers and any dates on the packaging, then ask relatives whether they remember the recording. For the output, discuss whether you want individual tracks, one continuous recording or both. Those are questions to settle with the provider, rather than promises about its standard service.
Arrange the studio visit before packing everything
Triangle Memory Box publishes daily hours of 9 AM to 7 PM, but also asks customers to call or text to arrange a studio visit. Use that appointment request when planning a drop-off. Its published address is 3112 Horseshoe Road, Creedmoor, NC 27522, and the appointment number is 919-339-9937.
Before traveling, describe the formats, approximate item count and anything visibly damaged. Ask about completion timing, the full quote and how originals will be returned. For VHS or other videotapes, confirm format acceptance and output choices first. Label cases with removable notes, photograph existing labels and avoid testing a fragile tape repeatedly in an old player. Leave mold, broken shells or tangled tape for a professional assessment rather than attempting a repair.
Choose film delivery around how you will watch
For film transfers, Triangle Memory Box says videos can be placed on a USB thumb drive or DVD. A DVD may suit a familiar viewing setup; files on a USB drive may be more convenient for copying and organizing. Ask which file type the film transfer uses, what equipment will play it and whether any delivery media costs are included.
When the work arrives, open every file and check the beginning, middle and end. Compare the contents against your inventory, including whether a reel expected to have sound actually does. Keep the physical originals and maintain a second digital copy in a separate location. Before renaming files, record which original each belongs to so that a family description can be traced back later.
Let relatives help date the finished home movies
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Triangle Memory Box. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your finished videos when deciding what to upload first.
Invite relatives to add comments and stories. Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it easier to find memories by year even when a film label only says something like a summer in the late seventies. A relative may recognize the house or identify a person without knowing the precise day.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For a birthday gathering, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos enter the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories.
