A transfer list that extends beyond VHS
Victory Studios lists both NTSC and PAL VHS, which is helpful to know if relatives recorded videos in different television systems. Its transfer list also includes Betacam and BCSP, DVCAM and DV, Digibeta, several DVCPro formats, HDCAM and HDV. The studio specifically asks customers to check HDV versions. Identify the label on each cassette before discussing a collection, especially when small camera tapes sit beside full-size VHS.
Give each item a simple number and photograph its label. A short inventory can connect a tape to a family name or occasion without relying on memory during a phone call. Keep uncertain descriptions honest: “possibly a childhood summer” is more useful than a confidently incorrect date. These are preparation suggestions, rather than requirements published by the studio.
Deciding between viewing files and an editing copy
The studio says it can deliver almost any file format, most often MP4 and Apple Pro-Res MOV. It also advertises transfers to file or DVD. Ask which output suits your intended use and whether receiving more than one version affects the quote. The published wording does not establish a standard package containing every output.
For everyday family viewing, discuss an MP4 that plays on the devices you actually use. If someone plans to edit the footage, ask whether a Pro-Res MOV copy would be appropriate and how much storage it will require. Before committing a large collection, clarify how files will be delivered, how recordings will be divided and how filenames will match your inventory. A DVD can be another viewing option, but a separate file copy makes future organization easier.
Older tapes and the separate baking charge
Victory Studios warns that some tape formats become difficult to work with and develop playback issues with age. It offers tape baking, saying this often fixes problems and can make unplayable tapes play correctly. The published charge is $40 per tape for baking. That figure is a treatment charge, not a published VHS transfer price, and the wording does not guarantee recovery.
If a cassette has visible damage, mold or a history of sticking during playback, describe that before bringing it in. Ask whether inspection is needed and whether any treatment would be approved separately. Avoid repeatedly playing a troubled tape to find out what is on it. Agree on the treatment scope and total estimate before work begins.
Planning the Seattle handoff and return
The website publishes a Seattle address at 2247 15th Avenue West and weekday hours of 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, with Saturday and Sunday closed. Contact the studio before arranging a visit to confirm how it wants to receive your tapes. Ask for current transfer pricing, expected completion timing and the arrangements for returning the originals.
On receipt, check every file against your numbered inventory. Play the beginning, a middle passage and the ending, listening as well as watching. Report missing material or unexpected playback problems while the project details are still fresh. Keep the original tapes and maintain a second digital copy in a separate place; an organized delivery folder alone is not a backup plan.
Physical storage and a private digital family archive
Victory Studios also describes a temperature-controlled storage vault for large collections of video and audio tapes and masters, available as a permanent or temporary option. Discuss that separately if the physical collection needs storage after transfer.
Memrial serves a different purpose after conversion: it is a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos, not a tape converter or part of Victory Studios. You can invite relatives, organize albums and add comments and stories. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose uploads with that limit in mind and keep your independent backup.
Use the footage to start a family conversation
Memrial’s Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so a recording remembered only as “sometime in the late eighties” can still be found by year. Invite relatives to help identify faces, locations and occasions before those details are forgotten.
For a birthday gathering, a Live Watch Party can synchronize an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat. The free plan includes 3 hours monthly and up to 6 participants. Event Memories can also collect new photos and videos through a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories.
