The DVD price changes at ten tapes
The published price list puts video tapes to DVD at $15.00 each for one to nine tapes, and $10.00 each for ten video tapes or more. Count your collection before requesting a quote, because the number of tapes determines which advertised rate applies. These are video-tape-to-DVD figures; they do not establish the cost of delivery on a thumb drive or external hard drive.
Ask for an estimate based on your actual tapes and preferred output. Confirm whether recording length affects the quote, what happens with blank tapes, and whether storage media, extra copies or tax add anything to the advertised amount. The contact page invites customers to arrange an appointment by email or phone, so use that conversation to settle the collection size, delivery choice and expected completion date.
Choose the output around how relatives will watch
For VHS, Joe's services page names DVD, thumb drives and external hard drives. The broader transfer page also lists flash cards, though it does not tie that option specifically to VHS. If flash-card delivery matters to you, confirm it directly. A storage device and a video file format are different things, so ask which file type you would receive and whether it will play on your intended computer or television.
For a relative who already uses a DVD player, a disc may be convenient. If you want to upload recordings to a private archive, keep a backup or share selected clips later, discuss a digital-file copy. Tell the business what you plan to do with the result before commissioning the transfer. That can help avoid choosing an output that requires another conversion before your family can use it.
Bring the photographs into the same conversation
The published services extend beyond video tapes to photographs, slides, digital camera cards containing photos or video, and color and black-and-white negatives. The price page also names 8mm, Super 8mm and 16mm film transfer to DVD. Identify reels separately from cassettes when making an inventory; the video-tape prices should not be used to estimate a film job.
For photos, slides and negatives, the price list shows a $39.99 minimum for up to 100, with additional items at 25 cents each. It also offers a slideshow DVD made from photos, slides or negatives with pans, zooms, dissolves and music of your choice: $75.00 for up to 200, or $125.00 for more than 200. Ask how those services relate to each other in a combined order, and whether you can receive individual image files as well as a finished slideshow.
Keep the labels and check the complete recording
Before an appointment, give each tape a simple inventory number and photograph its existing label. Write down any known year, people or occasion without covering the original information. Ask a relative to help identify uncertain labels; a short note such as 'possibly the summer before we moved' is more useful than a confident guess that later becomes hard to correct.
Set aside tapes with a cracked shell, visible mold or other damage and describe their condition before handing them over. Ask whether they can be assessed and what any repair would involve. Once the work is returned, compare the files or discs against your inventory, check the beginning and end of each recording, and sample the sound in several places. Keep the original tapes and make a separate backup of digital files before reorganizing or renaming your working copies.
Let the converted recording start a family conversation
After conversion, Memrial provides a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is separate from Video Transfers By Joe. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Invite relatives, organize albums and add stories; check file sizes when deciding what fits.
Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help you find memories by year. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seeking while relatives near or far use voice and text chat. The free plan allows three hours per month and up to six participants. A birthday recording can become a chance to ask who was behind the camera.
For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership, and their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link retains the memories, letting that gathering sit alongside the older recordings.
