Start with the VHS entry, then identify each tape
The published price list shows VHS / Camcorder tapes at £20.00, under a home movies and film table headed price per item. This is a concrete basis for an enquiry, but the entry does not name every camcorder format or state a recording duration cap. Send the format names from the cassette cases and ask the lab to confirm acceptance, the applicable rate and any tax or additional charges before booking.
Give each cassette a simple reference number and photograph its label. A note such as 'Tape C, seaside holiday, probably early nineties' is more useful than trying to remember the contents later. Flag cracked cases, loose tape or visible mould and ask what assessment is possible. Avoid opening damaged cassettes or playing them repeatedly just to complete the list.
Cine reels and photographs need their own estimate
Cine film is priced separately: the listed figures are £20.00 for 50ft / 3 inches, £40.00 for 200ft / 5 inches and £60.00 for 400ft / 7 inches. Those are film entries, not alternative VHS prices. Record the reel sizes you have and ask how the lab handles anything that falls outside these descriptions.
For accompanying photographs, the FAQ says loose photo pricing includes sizes up to A4. Larger photographs are billed separately as flatbed scans up to A3, with a quote requested for anything larger than A3. It also says photographs do not need sorting by size or colour. You might still group pictures by occasion for your own records, particularly when a photograph helps identify someone appearing in a film.
Resolve the handover before setting out
The lab's FAQ states that UK courier collection and return are included for standard orders, while an in-person visit is by appointment only. Its website also advertises staff driver collection in Marlow at £1.00 per mile. Ask which arrangement applies to your particular tape order and how any mileage charge is calculated.
The website publishes Unit 11, Westfield Farm, Henley Road, Medmenham, Marlow SL7 2TA, which our contact listing now reflects. Confirm the handover details when arranging an appointment; the map shows the Medmenham area rather than a confirmed unit entrance. Keep a copy of your item inventory and agree how the originals will be returned.
Decide what you want to play and keep
The website advertises digital download and DVD as standard delivery options. Confirm what that means specifically for VHS work, including the video file type, whether each cassette becomes a separate file and how long download access lasts. The price list also includes DVD transcoding to MPEG4 at £15.00, a separate service that should not be taken as proof of the output format for tapes.
Explain where you intend to watch the result: a television, computer or family archive. Once files arrive, sample the beginning, middle and end of each recording and listen to the sound. Match them against your inventory before renaming anything. Keep the originals and at least one separate digital backup; a convenient viewing copy should not be your only copy.
Let relatives supply the missing dates
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for the digital memories. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Vintage Photo Lab. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose a few recordings and related photographs first, then invite relatives to add comments and stories.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, so an uncertain summer holiday can still be found by year. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives nearby or far away, with the host controlling play, pause and seeking, plus voice and text chat. The free allowance is three hours per month and six participants. Pausing at an unfamiliar face gives everyone a chance to help identify them.
Connect an old recording with a new occasion
For a family anniversary, you could put an old celebration video beside photographs from the new gathering. Memrial's Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link retains the collected memories. This gives relatives a practical way to contribute their own view of the occasion without leaving you to chase scattered attachments.
