USB files on a page still named for DVD transfers
There are two strands to Wessex Photo's published description. The page is named Video to DVD Transfer and includes a description of AFX's home video to DVD service. It also contains a specific tape to USB offer, stating that MPEG4 is the supplied format. When discussing an order, refer to the USB service explicitly so that the delivery medium is agreed from the outset.
Wessex Photo says those MPEG4 files can be used for streaming, storage, editing and viewing on a Smart TV, computer or laptop. For your own setup, check how you will actually open them. A television's USB socket alone does not establish that it can play every video file. Ask about the file specification, then check your television or playback device's requirements. If you want both an easy viewing copy and files for later editing, describe both uses before choosing the output.
Understanding the hourly charges
The published Video and Camcorder Tape to USB charges are a £25.00 minimum charge, £25.00 for the first hour of the order and £20.00 per hour for additional hours. Additional copies are listed at £15.00 per USB drive. These are video and camcorder tape figures, so they should not be applied to a different kind of media transfer.
An inventory will make a quotation easier to understand. Number the cassettes, copy any handwritten duration labels and flag recordings whose length is unknown. Ask how part-hours are charged, how blank sections affect the total and whether the quotation includes any applicable tax and other costs. The published wording does not settle those details. Also distinguish an additional USB copy from additional footage: they answer different needs and have different listed charges.
Arrange the handover with the Blandford branch
Wessex Photo publishes a Blandford Forum branch at 9 Salisbury Street and a branch telephone number of 01258 458811. Start that conversation with the number of tapes, their format markings and the output you want. Establish where to take the tapes, who will handle the transfer and when the completed order is expected back.
The video page describes dedicated-driver collection and delivery in its account of AFX's service. Confirm how that arrangement applies to your order instead of assuming a home collection is included. Wessex Photo's general contact page also discusses online order collection and same-day photo printing. Those statements do not establish a video tape processing time. Agree the schedule for the tape job itself, particularly if you hope to show the footage at a birthday or reunion.
Give fragile recordings a clear identity
Before handing anything over, photograph each cassette and its label, and keep a simple numbered list. Add a short note such as 'summer holiday, probably early nineties' without treating a guess as a confirmed date. Ask relatives whether they recognise the labels; a few names can make the finished files much easier to identify.
If a cassette has a broken casing, visible mould or a damaged tape ribbon, avoid testing it repeatedly in an old player. Describe the problem and ask what assessment and repair options are available. Wessex Photo's video page states that there is no charge if a tape cannot be repaired. That statement does not promise that every tape is repairable or establish the charge for a successful repair, so obtain those details before proceeding.
Check the files before putting the originals away
On receipt, compare the files with your numbered inventory. Play the beginning, middle and end of each recording, listen for sound and check whether the expected events are present. Raise any missing recording or playback issue promptly. Agree the return of your original tapes when placing the order, and keep them afterwards alongside your notes.
Copy the files from the USB drive to another storage location before relying on it as your only copy. Keep a further backup separately. Descriptive filenames help, but preserve the connection to the cassette number so that several similar Christmas recordings do not become confused.
Make the converted footage part of a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Wessex Photo's transfer service. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check your video file sizes against that allowance before uploading.
Timeline uses exact or approximate dates to help you find memories by year. Live Watch Parties synchronise an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but need no archive membership, their uploads collect in the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories.
