A tape price with an output decision attached
The published $20 per tape rate explicitly covers VHS, HI8 and Mini DV to digital file format. Woodward Camera separately lists Camcorder to Data DVD at $20 and Camcorder to Flash Drive at $20, with an additional $12.50 for the flash drive. Those entries are useful when discussing an order, but they should not be combined into an assumed total for every VHS job. Ask which line applies to your tapes, whether storage media costs extra and how tax affects the final quote.
Count the cassettes before contacting the store and distinguish VHS from smaller camcorder formats. A photograph of an unfamiliar cassette can help you explain what you have. Give each tape a simple number and write down its label, likely contents and any known problems. If a cassette has a broken shell, visible mold or tangled tape, describe that condition and ask whether it can be accepted; do not try to play it merely to discover what is recorded.
MP4, USB and DVD answer different needs
Woodward Camera says movies from its video transfer service are delivered in MP4 format, and identifies USB drives and DVDs as its two primary delivery options. Its drop-off description likewise offers transfer to DVD or USB flash drive. Confirm whether a DVD order contains MP4 data files or a disc intended for DVD-player viewing, since those are different uses. A Data DVD price appears in the published list, so the distinction deserves an explicit answer.
For a family hoping to copy videos to a computer and build an online archive, accessible digital files are particularly useful. Ask how the files will be named and whether multiple recordings on one cassette remain together. Before choosing a disc for an older relative, check the equipment they actually use. Before choosing USB, check that the receiving computer has a suitable connection. Keep an untouched copy of the delivered files before making edits or shorter clips.
Plan the handoff around the order size
The website gives a general video-transfer turnaround of 1 to 4 weeks. It also says smaller orders, typically fewer than 8 tapes, can typically be returned within one week. Treat that smaller-order guidance as an estimate rather than a guaranteed deadline. If you want a recording ready for a birthday or reunion, discuss the date before leaving the tapes and allow time afterward to check the results.
Woodward Camera describes dropping tapes off. Bring your numbered inventory and ask how the originals will be matched to the finished files and returned. The store publishes weekday hours of 10:30 AM to 6 PM and weekend hours of 10:30 AM to 5 PM. Confirm arrangements before a special trip, particularly if you need someone to assess a damaged cassette or discuss an unusual format.
Use the 30-day window to check and copy
Woodward Camera says it can duplicate video transfer jobs for up to 30 days. For video lost within 30 days of receiving the transfer service, its published explanation offers replacement media for the original costs of the tape transfer. It also says video files cannot be retained beyond that period because of storage restrictions. This is a reason to inspect the delivery promptly and establish your own backups.
Open every file and sample the beginning, middle and end, listening as well as watching. Compare the files with your inventory, then make another copy on separate storage. Keep the physical tapes while you assess the transfer and decide what matters to retain. A cousin may recognize a location or person that the label never mentioned; record those identifications alongside the video while the conversation is fresh.
Bring the recordings into a private family archive
After conversion, Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories, not a tape converter or part of Woodward Camera. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Invite relatives, organize photos and home videos in albums, and use Timeline with exact or approximate dates to find memories by year. An uncertain summer date can still give a holiday recording a useful place.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link: contributors sign in but need not join the archive, uploads collect in the event album, and closing the link keeps those memories. Keep separate backups of your converted originals as well.
