One collection can contain several different formats
Zim's lists VHS, VHS-C, Mini DV, DVD/CD and Mini DVD alongside photos, slides and audio cassettes. It also lists 8mm and Super 8mm projector film. That makes the service relevant to a mixed family collection, though each medium needs its own discussion about transfer and delivery. A small camcorder cassette and a reel of projector film should not be treated as the same item simply because both contain moving pictures.
Sort the collection by the labels printed on the media, then make a brief inventory. Number each item and note any handwritten titles without covering the original label. If a format is unclear, describe its markings when you contact the business. Include relatives in this step: someone else may recognize a wedding date or a child's school performance that means little to the person organizing the transfer.
Arrange the handover before leaving home
The published address is 1906 Bradford Place, Morton, PA 19070. Zim's says tapes can be dropped off by appointment only and asks customers to text or call before arriving. Its mail-in and drop box options offer other ways to submit a collection, but confirm the instructions for the route you intend to use. An advertised drop box does not remove the need to agree on a handover arrangement.
For mail-in orders, the website asks for a prepaid return shipping label so the original media can be sent back with digitized media on a free USB stick. Build that return step into your preparations. Keep a copy of your inventory, pack the media so it cannot move loosely in the parcel, and check the agreed destination before posting. For any cracked, moldy or otherwise damaged cassette, ask whether it can be accepted before putting it into the order.
USB delivery starts the next stage of preservation
Zim's says it converts tapes to a standard USB stick, usually in MP4 format. The word usually matters: confirm the file format for your own order, especially if you plan to watch on a particular television or share files with relatives. Ask how recordings will be named and whether one long tape becomes a single file or several files. Those details affect how easily you can identify and organize the results.
When the files arrive, compare them with your inventory and play a sample from the beginning, middle and end of each recording. Listen to the sound as well as checking the picture. Note anything you want to query while you can still match the file to its original tape. Copy the files off the supplied USB stick to another storage location, keep a separate backup, and retain the tapes while you review the results. A convenient delivery device should not become your only copy.
Get a tape quote and separate out any film reels
The published details here do not establish a VHS price or a completion time. Give Zim's the number and types of tapes, describe their condition, and ask for an itemized quote, any additional charges and an estimated completion date. If you need the recordings for an anniversary gathering, explain the date before handing over the collection.
Film needs particular attention because the website gives different prices for larger projector reels on its home and services pages. Do not use those reel prices to estimate a VHS order. If your collection includes film, request the current price for each reel size and keep that part of the quote separate. The services page describes 8mm and Super 8mm film conversion without sound, so also ask how that applies to any reel you believe has an audio track.
Let the family help identify the digital memories
After conversion, Memrial can provide a separate private family archive for the digital photos and home videos. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Zim's service. Its free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across an archive, with no card needed. Check your file sizes before choosing what to upload, then invite relatives to add comments and stories that explain who appears in the footage.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping everyone find memories by year even when a tape only says something like a summer holiday. A Live Watch Party can bring relatives nearby or far away into synchronized playback of an uploaded home video. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat for the conversation. The free plan includes 3 hours of Watch Parties per month and up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership to add photos or videos, and their uploads collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already gathered. That gives newly converted footage a useful setting alongside the photographs and recollections people contribute today.
