One collection, several kinds of video
The Disc Inc. format list includes 8mm, Hi8, Digital 8, 4mm, Mini DV, Beta, Digital Betacam and Betacam SP, alongside VHS formats. Super 8 and standard 8 reels also appear, but those are film reels rather than videotape cartridges. This distinction matters when sorting a mixed collection and comparing prices: a reel and a cassette are different items even when both carry an 8mm label.
Start by reading the format printed on each cassette or case. Make a simple inventory with a number, any handwritten title and the format where you can identify it. Keep uncertain items in a separate group and ask the business to identify them. Photograph labels before handing anything over, especially if a relative has written names or dates that may be useful later.
Read the cartridge price bands before making a budget
The published video cartridge pricing is $19.50 each for 0 to 5, $19.00 each for 6 to 10, $18.50 each for 11 to 15, $18.00 each for 16 to 20, $17.50 each for 21 to 25 and $17.00 each for 26 or more. These quantity bands are more useful for a video enquiry than applying a film or audio rate to your VHS tapes.
Ask for a quote against your actual inventory, including any taxes, delivery media, additional copies or other charges. The published cartridge table does not specify a recording-duration allowance. If some tapes contain several hours, confirm how they will be charged and divided into files. For a larger collection, choose a few recordings you particularly want to see first, then use that first batch to settle your labeling and storage routine.
PAL recordings and the timing of your order
Disc Inc. says it can process most VHS, VHS-C and S-VHS types, plus select 8mm and 4mm tapes, in PAL format. Its FAQ states that additional fees apply for PAL to NTSC conversion. Mention tapes recorded abroad at the enquiry stage and ask which service your particular cassette needs; the published wording does not establish that every PAL format is accepted.
The stated processing estimate is around 7-10 business days once an order has been received, with turnaround expressly not guaranteed because each order is different. If you want a recording for a birthday or reunion, allow time after conversion to inspect it and prepare it for viewing. For cracked shells, tangled tape or suspected mold, describe the condition before bringing the items in and ask whether assessment or repair is possible. Do not try repeated playback to test a visibly damaged tape.
Make the MP4 handover work for your family
Video cartridges are transferred to digital MP4 files, according to Disc Inc. Ask how those files are delivered and whether filenames can follow the numbers in your inventory. If you also have audio cassettes, the stated audio output is MP3, so keep those recordings clearly distinguished from the videos when discussing the order.
Once you receive the files, check the beginning, middle and end of each recording, listen to the sound and compare the content with your tape list. Keep a note of unexpected gaps or missing items so you can raise specific questions. Retain the original tapes and save copies of the files in two separate places. Before renaming anything, preserve an untouched copy of the delivered folder so the original handover remains easy to trace.
From transferred files to a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert tapes and is not part of Disc Inc. You can organize home videos and photos into albums, invite relatives, and add comments and stories. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across the archive, with no card needed. Check the size of your converted files before choosing which recordings to upload.
Timeline helps you find memories by year using exact or approximate dates. If a tape only says summer vacation, a relative may remember the year even when nobody can identify the day. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives near or far use voice and text chat. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the collected memories. This can bring a newly transferred reunion recording together with pictures and recollections from the people who were there.
