DVD or digital files: decide how you want to watch
Diamond Photos explicitly includes VHS to DVD/digital formats in its transfer options. That supports a VHS enquiry, but does not specify a downloadable file type, USB delivery, disc specification or whether multiple outputs can be included in one order. Explain what you intend to do with the result before agreeing the work. Watching on a DVD player and sharing a video with relatives online can require different deliverables.
If your main aim is a family archive, ask for the exact digital file format and how you will receive it. Ask whether you can copy those files to your own computer and backup drive, and whether there is a separate charge for a disc or additional copy. These are questions to settle with the shop, rather than assumptions about its service. A short written description of the agreed output will make collection easier.
Keep VHS and cine film separate in your enquiry
The transfer list also names super 8mm and 8mm cine films. That is helpful if a family collection crosses generations, with reels from one period and VHS recordings from another. It does not mean the media use the same transfer process, price or delivery schedule. Present them as separate groups so the provider can assess each part of the collection.
For tapes, note the cassette type and any label information without guessing the running time. For reels, record the markings on the container and keep each reel with its original label. Ask about any format you cannot identify, and mention visible damage before handing anything over. A cracked cassette, loose tape or mould should prompt a discussion about safe handling; do not try to play or repair it simply to complete your inventory.
Plan the Finchley Central conversation
Diamond Photos publishes 28 Ballards Lane, Finchley Central, London, N3 2BJ as its address and invites customers to visit in-store for service information. Its contact page lists opening hours of 9:30 am to 5:00 pm Monday to Friday and 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Saturday, with Sunday closed. Check arrangements before bringing a substantial or fragile collection.
The published details here do not establish transfer prices or processing times. Request a quote that identifies the number and types of items, the chosen output, any additional charges and the expected collection arrangements. If you need the videos for a birthday or anniversary, give the actual date and ask whether the work can be ready. Also establish how your originals will be identified and returned, particularly when several relatives have contributed tapes.
Make the first viewing a useful check
Keep a simple numbered list of what you submit, using removable labels on cases rather than on exposed tape. Write down known occasions and uncertain dates separately. A relative may recognise a wedding venue or school uniform later, so an incomplete description is more useful than a confidently wrong one.
When the converted files arrive, open each one and check the beginning, a point in the middle and the ending. Listen as well as watch, and compare the file names with your inventory. Confirm that each expected recording is present before putting the originals away. Keep the original tapes and retain another copy of the digital files on separate storage. Uploading a video to an archive is a useful way to organise and share it, but should sit alongside your own backup.
Let relatives add the dates and stories afterwards
After conversion, Memrial can hold the digital memories in a separate private family archive. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Diamond Photos. The free archive includes 2.0 GB of shared storage, with no card needed. That allowance covers the archive as a whole, so consider the size of your converted videos when choosing what to upload.
Timeline lets you use exact or approximate dates to find memories by year. A holiday remembered only by its approximate year can still have a useful place. Invite relatives to contribute comments and stories, then use a Live Watch Party to watch an uploaded home video together. The host controls play, pause and seek, with synchronised playback and voice or text chat for relatives nearby or far away. Free Watch Parties include 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
For an anniversary gathering, Event Memories offers a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already added. This can bring today's celebration together with the older recording that inspired it.
