A Walthamstow studio with three output choices
Inspire Studios publishes its address as 255 Hoe Street, Walthamstow, London, E17 9PT. The VHS conversion page specifically offers DVD, USB or digital format. That distinction matters because a disc for a relative's DVD player and a file for a family archive serve different purposes, even when they contain the same recording.
Think about the equipment people actually use. A DVD may suit someone who already watches discs, while a digital file can be easier to copy, organise and share privately. USB describes the storage device, so ask which file format will be on it and whether that file plays on your intended computer or television. If you want both a disc and files, request that combination explicitly rather than assuming every output is included.
What the £25 starting price covers
The studio's conversion page advertises conversion of VHS and cassette tapes to DVD starting from £25. Treat this as a starting price for the advertised DVD service. It does not establish a fixed price for your collection or a price for USB and digital delivery, and the wording does not state a duration allowance or VAT treatment.
Make your quotation request easy to answer. Give the number of tapes, their labelled formats and any known running times, then state the outputs you want. Ask for the total charge, any additional media costs, the expected completion date and how the original tapes will be returned. A tape labelled with a two-hour recording capacity is not necessarily two hours of footage, so distinguish what the label says from what you actually know.
Identify the mini cassettes before bringing them in
Alongside VHS, Inspire Studios uses the phrase 'Mini Cassettes Conversion'. That broad label is worth clarifying if your collection contains small camcorder tapes. Send the format name printed on the casing, or describe it accurately, and ask whether that particular tape type is accepted. Do not assume that all small cassettes use the same playback equipment.
Before a visit, make a simple numbered list and match each number to its tape. Note handwritten titles, known dates and any visible damage without opening the casing. Mention mould, a broken shell or a loose tape and ask whether it can be assessed; conversion alone does not promise repair. If a recording is especially important, identify it so you can discuss the handling and output requirements first.
Plan the Hoe Street visit and the first playback
The conversion page invites an in-store visit. The studio's FAQ lists opening hours of Monday to Friday, 10am to 6pm; Saturday, 11am to 5pm; and Sunday, 11am to 4pm. Confirm arrangements before making a special journey, particularly if you want to discuss an unusual format or damaged tape.
When the completed files arrive, watch a sample from the beginning, middle and end of each recording. Check sound as well as picture, and compare the contents with your inventory. Keep the originals while you review the results. Save a second digital copy on separate storage before you start renaming or organising files, and preserve the delivered version alongside any shorter edits you make for sharing.
Turn the files into a private family collection
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Inspire Studios. The free archive includes 2.0 GB of shared storage with no card needed. Check the size of your returned videos when deciding what to upload; that allowance is shared across the archive.
Invite relatives to help identify people and add stories. Memrial's Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, making it possible to find memories by year even when the tape only says something like 'summer holiday'. Keep uncertain dates approximate rather than making a guess look definite.
For a family birthday, a Live Watch Party can synchronise an uploaded home video for relatives near or far. The host controls play, pause and seek, with voice and text chat alongside playback. The free allowance is three hours per month with up to six participants. Event Memories can collect new photos and videos from the same celebration through a secure contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; uploads enter the event album, and closing the link keeps the collected memories.
