VHS and camcorder tapes in the same collection
The website names VHS, VHS-C, Hi8 and MiniDV transfers, while its FAQ also includes Digital8. That distinction matters when a family collection spans several cameras: similar-looking small cassettes can belong to different formats. Copy the wording from each cassette onto a simple inventory instead of identifying it by size alone.
Number each tape and keep its handwritten label in your notes. A label such as Christmas or school concert is a useful clue, even when the recording turns out to contain several occasions. Photograph the labels before handing anything over. If a shell is cracked, a tape has visible mold, or playback previously failed, describe the problem and ask whether it can be assessed before arranging the transfer. Do not assume repair is included.
The $15 transfer and your delivery choice
SJ VHS Digitizing publishes a Standard Tape Transfer price of $15 per tape. Its delivery page lists a free secure digital download, a 16GB USB flash drive for $10, and DVD burning for $10 per disc. The USB drive or DVDs are delivered or shipped with the original tapes. Ask for a complete quote covering your collection and selected delivery option; the published per-tape figure does not establish every possible charge or tax condition.
MP4 is the stated digital file format. Downloads suit a household that wants to organize files on a computer and make backup copies. A USB drive can be a convenient physical handover, but check that the intended television or other device can play the files. If you choose DVDs for familiar viewing, ask about receiving the MP4 files too, so you have a practical starting point for an online family archive.
South Jersey pickup or a US mail-in order
The provider offers free pickup for South Jersey customers with five or more tapes. Its pickup page says scheduling follows a quote request and that tapes can be collected from a home or office. For a smaller collection, confirm the available handover arrangements. The published South Jersey service description does not identify a precise pickup boundary.
Mail-in service is advertised for customers anywhere in the US. Return shipping is included in the service total, with the delivery page specifying insured USPS Priority Mail. Keep a copy of your inventory and obtain packing and sending instructions before posting irreplaceable recordings. Standard turnaround is stated as 7-10 business days from receipt of the tapes; rush service costs an additional fee. Allow separately for transport when planning around a birthday or reunion.
Consider enhancement after preserving the recording
SJ VHS Digitizing also advertises AI-enhanced upscaling of footage that has already been digitized, including footage originally recorded on Super 8 or VHS. This describes work on existing digital video; it does not establish a physical Super 8 film-transfer service. Its FAQ describes AI upscale output at full 1080p HD.
Before choosing enhancement, ask to understand the difference between the standard transfer and the enhanced result, including any additional cost. Higher output resolution does not prove that every detail in an old recording can be recovered. Keeping an unenhanced copy alongside any processed version gives you a reference for faces, textures and movement. Decide based on the recording you have and how you want it to look when watched together.
Check the MP4 files while keeping the tapes
The FAQ confirms that original tapes are returned. It also states that local customers receive their originals back at no extra charge, while mail-in return shipping is included in the service total. Once the files arrive, compare them with your numbered inventory, check the beginning and end of each recording, and listen for sound. Flag unexpected gaps or missing files promptly.
Keep the originals while you review the result and make independent digital backups. Give working copies descriptive filenames, leaving an untouched copy of the delivered files elsewhere. Invite a relative to help identify people and dates: someone else may recognize a room, a school uniform or the voice behind the camera.
From downloaded recordings to a private family archive
Memrial is a separate private family archive for digital memories after conversion. It does not convert physical tapes or form part of this provider. The free plan includes 2.0 GB of storage shared across an archive, with no card needed. Upload selected home videos and photos, invite relatives, and collect their comments and stories.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping you find memories by year even when a cassette only says summer holiday. Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video through host play, pause and seek controls, with voice and text chat for relatives nearby or far away. The free allowance is three hours per month and up to six participants.
For a family reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos go into the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already collected.
