Sort the VHS tapes from the camcorder cassettes
Memoritize lists VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, S-VHS-C, Hi8, Digital8, Video8 and MiniDV among its supported video formats. A mixed collection therefore need not be described simply as VHS. Read the format printed on each cassette and separate the types before requesting an estimate. Small tapes can look similar while belonging to different recording systems.
Give every cassette a simple identifying number, then make a matching list of label text, suspected dates and anything you remember about the recording. Keep uncertain descriptions uncertain: "possibly the school play" is more helpful than a confident but mistaken title. Flag cracked cases, loose tape or visible residue and ask whether the provider can assess them before playback. Do not attempt a repair just to make a tape look presentable.
Arrange a Dallas handover before making the trip
The published appointment requirement matters when planning a visit. Memoritize offers scheduled drop-off at its Dallas office and says it can drive to customers. Its pickup and drop-off coverage is defined by a published list of ZIP codes, including 75243, rather than a promise covering every nearby address. Check your ZIP code and agree on the arrangements before packing everything for collection.
For either approach, photograph the collection and keep an item count. Pack tapes in their cases where available and keep photographs grouped separately. At handover, agree which items are included, how originals will be returned and whom to contact about questions. Those are useful details to settle for your particular order, especially if different relatives supplied different parts of the collection.
Read the video price alongside the order minimum
The pricing page displays $30 under Video Tapes. That entry alone does not spell out a recording-length allowance or every condition, so request an estimate based on your actual cassette count and contents. The same page states a $50 minimum order fee. Its example concerns photo scanning: 50 photos calculated at $0.60 each would cost $30, but the minimum makes that order $50 in total.
Ask how the minimum applies to your tape or mixed-media order, whether any collection charge or tax is additional, and when the work is expected to be ready. Also agree on the video file format and delivery method. Memoritize describes an emailed online gallery link, but its more specific explanation of downloading from that gallery concerns photos; confirm the video arrangements directly.
Photographs can supply the missing context
Memoritize scans prints up to 8.5 by 11 inches and publishes 600 DPI for photos, with 4,000 DPI for slides and negatives. It also says it scans the back of a loose photograph when writing is present. Names and dates on those backs may help identify the people appearing in an otherwise unlabeled home video.
For glued-in album photographs, its pricing page describes scanning the page and cropping individual images. Avoid pulling apart an album before discussing that option. The published sleeve charges are $0.15 per photo for removal and a further $0.15 per photo for putting photographs back into plastic sleeves. Keep those photo handling costs separate from any tape estimate.
Check the files while the labels are still familiar
When digital copies arrive, compare them with your inventory. Open each video, check sound and picture at several points, and look at the beginning and end. Check scanned backs and album images too if those were part of the order. Ask about anything missing while the job details are easy to locate.
Keep the original tapes and photographs, and make a second digital copy on separate storage. File names based on your item numbers preserve the connection to the physical collection. Invite a relative to help identify faces or places, but record disputed dates as approximate rather than overwriting uncertainty.
Make the converted collection part of family life
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital photos and home videos. It does not convert physical tapes and is not part of Memoritize. The free allowance is 2.0 GB shared across the archive, with no card needed. Choose a few recordings and photographs to start, keeping your own backups.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates so relatives can find memories by year. For a family birthday, Live Watch Parties can synchronize an uploaded home video, with host play, pause and seek controls plus voice and text chat for relatives near or far. The free plan includes 3 hours per month and up to 6 participants.
Event Memories adds a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in but do not need archive membership; their photos and videos collect in the event album. Closing the link keeps the memories already contributed, giving that birthday gathering a place alongside older family footage.
