Separate video cassettes from film reels
The published tape list includes VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Digital8, 8mm cassettes, MiniDV, MicroMV and Betamax. This provides direct evidence of VHS transfer and gives owners of older camcorders a useful format checklist. Read the markings on each cassette before counting a batch; two tapes that look similar may belong to different recording systems.
The Digitize Center separately lists 8mm, Super 8, Regular 8 and 16mm film. Its audio category covers audio cassettes, reel-to-reel, CDs and micro-cassette, while the photo category includes prints, slides, negatives and documents. Keep these groups distinct in your inventory. An 8mm video cassette and an 8mm film reel need different handling, even though their labels share a number.
Give each item a simple reference number and photograph its label. Add any known subject, approximate year and uncertainty to your own list. A relative who recognizes a birthday or holiday may help identify an otherwise anonymous recording before it leaves your hands.
Choose the delivery before settling the quote
The website offers cloud delivery for streaming, sharing and downloading, a USB thumb drive described for computers or Smart TVs, and a professionally made CD/DVD disc set. These are useful options to discuss, but the published descriptions do not establish the exact video file type or which output choices apply to every medium.
For an archive you can manage yourself, ask for downloadable files and confirm their format, resolution and compatibility with your devices. If discs appeal to a relative, check the required player and whether digital downloads are also included. Ask how long cloud access lasts and what happens if you need another download later.
The company says pricing depends on the total number of items sent and the storage option chosen. Request a written quote that identifies your media types, output selection and the complete payable amount. Also clarify what counts as one item and whether recording length affects the quote. There is no verified VHS unit price here to use as a dependable budget figure.
Understand enhancement and expedited processing
The Digitize Center describes a proprietary Eclipse AI enhancement for color, detail and clarity, and says customers receive original and enhanced versions. Treat the improvement as the company’s description of its service, rather than a guaranteed result for an individual tape. Ask whether enhancement applies to your formats, whether it is optional and how it affects the quote.
Keeping both versions lets you compare faces, motion and familiar colors without losing the unenhanced digital copy. Ask about a representative sample if the difference matters to you. For damaged, moldy or broken tapes, describe the condition before sending them and ask whether the company can assess them; enhancement is not evidence of physical tape repair.
The website advertises options to expedite processing to as little as 3 days. That is an expedited processing claim, not a confirmed standard turnaround or a promise that shipping and return delivery fit inside three days. If a screening date matters, obtain an agreed schedule for your particular order.
Keep track of originals and check the results
The company states that all originals are returned with the digitized files. Before arranging the handover, confirm the current sending instructions and return arrangements, then keep your numbered inventory. Do not force a stuck cassette or try to play an obviously damaged tape simply to identify it.
When the collection comes back, match the originals to that inventory and open every delivered video. Check the beginning, a middle passage and the ending, listen to the audio, and note unexpected blank sections or missing recordings. Retain the original media while you resolve any questions. Keep another digital copy on separate storage so a lost drive does not leave the family dependent on a single set.
Make the converted collection useful to relatives
After conversion, Memrial offers a separate private family archive for digital memories. It does not convert tapes or form part of The Digitize Center’s transfer service. Its free plan includes 2.0 GB of shared archive storage with no card needed. Check the size of your returned files before deciding which memories to upload first.
Timeline accepts exact or approximate dates, helping relatives find memories by year even when a tape only says summer vacation. Albums, comments and stories can connect a recording with the people who remember it. Keep uncertain dates approximate instead of giving an unidentified scene a false precision.
Live Watch Parties synchronize an uploaded home video, with the host controlling play, pause and seek while relatives nearby or far away use voice and text chat. The free allowance is 3 hours per month with up to 6 participants. For a reunion, Event Memories provides a secure occasion contribution link. Contributors sign in without needing archive membership, their photos and videos collect in the event album, and closing the link keeps the memories.
